By popular request, here is the Blossom Dearie Mixtape! Since Blossom is pretty well know comparatively, I tried to find lesser known tracks as well as recordings that are some of my absolute favorites. I love the way this woman sings a ballad. There are some clips from interviews from her episode of Piano Jazz with Marion McPartland and an interview from 1995 with Brian Bury. I opted to include more music and fewer interviews to represent her incredible recording career.
I recently read an article by Will Friedwald where he stated that Blossom's best work was from her earliest albums. I strongly disagree. While I love her early albums, I think her later work really showed a progression and some of my favorite recordings are from far later in her career. When she started releasing albums from her own label, Daffodil, it was clear she really got to do what she wanted. I'll be curious to hear what you think! Blossom often said in interviews that she did not want to talk about the past, so I'm sure she would appreciate your consideration of her later work.
